Plant ideas

OK, so I can't have an evergreen climber growing through an obelisk, so is there a narrow evergreen  plant that will grow say, no higher than 5 foot, no wider than 2 foot, to go in clay soil, facing North/East, fairly sheltered small garden? I don't mind trimming it if necessary to keep it narrow. I don't like conifers. Any ideas very welcome. Thanks

Oh, must be hardy too - I don't ask for much!

Actually you can get an evergreen plant to grow through an obelisk. There is at least one evergreen clematis which survives here in Scotland through our winters.
