What is it?

Hi,
I have this small tree / bush in my garden. It has been in place for several years with no problems. It loses its leaves in the Autumn, but they grow again in the Spring. However, it has now started losing its leaves early. Anyone know why and what kind of tree / bush it is please?

  • It looks like a winged spindle aka euonymus alatus,
It is planted very close to the wall and fence so I wonder if it’s just not getting enough water.

Do the leaves usually turn a glorious red in the autumn?  It looks like a Euonymus alatus (spindle) but it does look very unhappy.

It’s in a very sheltered spot ... could the soil be very dry several inches down below the surface?  Last year’s drought is having long term effects.

    Hi,
Thanks to both of you for your comments. Yes, the leaves do turn red in the Autumn. With the recent heavy rain it looks like more leaves are sprouting.
