So last year I planted a new one as my old one died as it was overshadowed by other plants and was fighting for the light. This year there is new growth but I'm worried its suffering the same fate as the last one as plants around it are over shadowing it. Does it need the light to grow and do I need to ensure there are no plants around it?

The first time I grew this plant it got so big it overshadowed and swamped the plants beside it.  I have just brought a new one last week and plan to put in a border where I will give it its own space.
In the past week I have been to two gardens and they were growing it alone in a big terracotta pot. One was in a very horticultural knowledgable friends garden and one was in a Chelsea garden designers garden so maybe they know something we don’t 😊

Was it in dry shade? I suspect it was lack of moisture from competing plants that stopped it getting it's roots down. I have one that is mostly in shade but it does OK (need to move it) so I don't think lack of light could have been the only issue.
They struke from cuttings really easily BTW.
