Chives- dividing just now

Dirty HarryDirty Harry Posts: 1,022

I've had these chives in this pot for a bit under 2 years now and they definitely seem significantly weedier this year.

Suspecting they need divided but have read early spring/autumn is best. Could I still do it just now without too much going wrong?

I’d cut them hard back to a couple of inches above thd ground level and then break that clump up into at least six clumps.

Plant them (in the ground if poss)  water, and stand well back ... they'll love having more space.

I dont always take much notice of timings for something like that, but maybe I've just been lucky!
They look like they need a bit of tlc, so it's probably worth just splitting into two clumps, repotting in fresh compost/soil and giving them a good drink. They like a little more shade than many other herbs too, so you could keep them out of full sun until they get going again.  :)

    Sounds good!

Don't doubt they'd be better in the ground but don't have the space so pots it'll have to be.

I've grown them both ways Harry, and I haven't noticed much difference. They're a useful plant as they seem to be happy no matter what conditions they have  :)
