Nelly fades in full sun.  Much better planted in a shady aspect or with sun for only part of the day and then she's gorgeous.

Way back in about 2006 there was a clematis fanatic on a previous incarnation of these boards who was very sniffy about Nelly and found her common so I started a Save Nelly thread for people who appreciate her.

It's perfect for a north facing aspect. My sister has one in that location.
Too pastelly pale for me  ;)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I know but I grew mine with Rahvarinne and they were a splendid partnership - http://www.clematis.hull.ac.uk/new-clemdetail.cfm?dbkey=387

I wasn't sure whether to start a new topic or tag onto this, so apologies if I have gone through the wrong procedure.  Can you help me to id these two clematis, the deep purple one is in flower now and looks like velvet, and the pink/red/mauve one was in flower a month or two ago - April/May time. I have two labels but I am not sure which goes with which clematis - Ernest Markham and Viticelia Violette. Can you help please?

Many thanks all! Obelixx, I've got a huge stretch of bare fence that is crying out for climbers so I'm happy to become a clemaholic 😅 thank you for the link

Yes, I know you are right Obelixx.  I have now managed to sort the names from the Hull link you highlighted for me - The Violette is the deep purple flowered clem and the Ernest Markham is the more red/pink flower.  Both are lovely and work well together but I do prefer the deep purple Violette.

Well, the clue is in the name of one of them isn't it?  Violette has to be purple.
