    Hello, thanks for all your answers.  We live near Chipping Norton if that helps.  Would you say we should go for the wide border down the side of the fence.  I am just wondering if it might be a bit too much but cannot think of anything else

    I don't think it would be too much, you seem to have a fair old size garden there. I take it you're trying to add a bit of interest to that middle section. If you get on with your neighbours,  it might be worth asking them what shrubs they have in their garden. You don't need to copy them, but it will give you some idea of the sort of thing that grows well in your area.
