Acer

My mature acer has a good natural shape, which I want to keep. But new growth is making it look tatty.
What is the maximum diameter of branch/twig that I can prune at this time of year without any risk of bleeding?
Thanks

Occasionally I have to trim bits from mine that overhang a footpath.
I find that even a branch a few mm thick will bleed this time of year.
I had to do some slightly more drastic pruning last winter, but due to no cold spells when I pruned it last week in December it bled heavily for about 3 weeks. All the leaves on branches that bled are tiny this year.

I'd better stick to new green twigs then. Thanks @Pete.8
