To Weed or not to Weed?

Hi all!

My husband and I have moved in to a house with a fantastic garden that we are trying to get to know.  We have come from a flat so this is our first green space and we are struggling with some pretty basic stuff! We moved in in December when most of the garden was bare and hibernating, and we've had a great few months watching mystery bulbs rise up and surprise us.  We have 2 large veggie patches that we are having regular weed-battles with but in amongst our flower beds we have these (see attached) green wonders sprouting up.  The problem is we're unsure if these are just particularly aggressive and large weeds or if they are going to produce a flower of some sort.  They seem relatively reined in in terms of where they are cropping up - but there are a lot of them. I dont wan't to start tearing out the previous owners hard work so if anyone could please advise it would be very much appreciated. I expect a lot of you will take one look and tell me it's obvious!

Thanks in advance :)

Hello @dawn-315 ..... and welcome to the forum blush

It could be herbaceous phlox ... see this pic.

Probably worth letting it grow and, hopefully, flower .... and then it will be easier to identify.

    Hi @Bee witched

Thanks so much! It does look very like that, definitely worth giving it some more time I think! My worry was that it would be getting in the way of other flowers and plants but I don't think there looks to be much below it for now.

    Thanks again

I am really interested in knowing the answer to this as I too moved home in December, have discovered a huge patch of these growing rampantly in one bed and was also unsure if they're weeds or about to put on a show 😅. You guys did better than me though, I went around "weeding" the beds in Winter only to find I pulled out a load of well established aubrieta 😭 worse still, because they are no longer there as ground cover, I now have a bed full of actual weeds 🤦🏽‍♀️ I have learnt my lesson now!!

Yesterday, I accidentally weeded the viola I got for free this spring from a garden centre -  was just in automatic mode and hands were moving faster than my brain could keep up with!

Glad to come across this. We have some too, and ours also hasn't flowered yet. :)
