Hi could someone identify this shrub and plant please

    Not good at shrubs, but the smaller plant looks like a Rodgersia pinnata.

    Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

    The plant is Rodgersia (aesculifolia?) Not sure on the shrub.

    Pic 2:  Could the shrub be some type of variegated portugese laurel?

    Kitty 2 - you’re right. We had discussed that and did a quick google and didn’t look right - just googled again and brought up completely different photos - wonder if I just hadn’t put the word variegated in!!! Thank you all. Great help as always
