I have been away for a few days and have come back and found 1 plants leaves have died and down to the soil and another plant has very yellow leaves and a silvery slime on them. What has caused this?

Silvery slime is usually the work of slugs and snails, and they might have chewed through the stem of the one that's died.  Yellowing is, I think, usually caused by lack of nutrients, so a liquid seaweed feed might help.  I'm sure others will know more about it than me.
