Aphids or what ?

I have 2 tubs of violas on my patio growing strongly until this week. Then suddenly all the plants in one of the tubs wilted and died.
As I was pulling out the dead plants I came across the usual slugs and snails, but in addition the soil was covered by thousands of what look like very tiny (1/10 mm or so) greenish aphids.
Are these indeed aphids? Is the other tub likely to suffer too.
There are a lot of aphids in my garden this year, mainly on the roses, but I've seen
nothing like this before.

They look like aphids to me. They seem particularly bad this year. My violas have succumbed to the same fate, though I have been neglecting to water them as well.

Very difficult to see. Could even be thrips. Either way, both aphids and thrips love over-fed soft growing plants. Thrips can transmit viruses that can ultimately kill your plants too.
