    Thank you, the thing that throws me is im sure it had a purple flower a couple years back.

    It's an annual, it wasn't there a couple of years ago.

    The first plant, is it low growing and sprawling on the ground? Could be a Vinca Major.

    Hello Borderline, 
    I've got Vinca Major in the back garden but it doesn't look like this one.
    Its only about 3 ft high but growing pretty rapidly. 
    Its had a cluster of smallish purple flowers about 2 years ago, nothing last year and not sure what to expect this year.

    Is it a part of the plant on the left in the first photo?
    I do not grow hydrangeas, so don't know if you get red stems or if the new leaves are like the close up.
    Just that the left side looks hydrangea-ish.

    Edited as what I am trying to say is could it be two different plants?

    Oh I lie! I grow the climbing one, but not bushy ones.
