Good clematis companion to my Rosa Compassion?

The rose will be grown over a sturdy rose arch, plenty of sun, open area of the garden, very much improved London clay soil.
Would clematis Etoile Violette work, or too vigorous?
I particularly like smaller flowered, viticella type clematis.
