Unsure on Willow Trees

KatstezKatstez Posts: 19
Hi, we have 3 willow trees which have been in for a year. We brought them from an RHS show but look nothing like the ones on display looked. The guy said I would be able to shape how I wanted. Can someone tell me what I’m doing wrong. The photos show all 3 but all the stems are going outwards and there is very few especially in middle. There is also shoots coming from bottom. Please help. Thankyou.

    What shape do you want?
The shoots from the bottom can either be woven in or wrapped around the main stem, or pulled off as close to the main stem as possible. What you have is a bunch of rooted cutting that have been fastened together, the different colours would indicate different varieties.  Be aware that willow grow into big trees unless you keep pruning hard.

Not sure on shape but thought it would be a lot bushier from the top of the weave like the ones on display. Something like photos attached (which is just from internet). I’m not sure if I needed to cut back at some stage to encourage growth from middle. Thankyou

If you cut each branch back by three quarters, it should branch out more.
