What rose will it be?
I inherited only 3 plants in the old, neglected garden belonging to the cottage we recently bought.
1 is a vigorous looking, very thorny, shrub rose that I put in a pot and have carefully tended ever since (it was in quite a bad way, as the garden had been previously abandoned for about 3 years).
We named it 'Helen', after the old lady who sold us the house...and the three of us have been placing bets on what colour it'll be.
Is it ridiculous to be excited now that the first bud is starting to open?!
Looks like it may be a deep plum or a red.
Can't wait

Please let us have another photo when the bud breaks
It is a slightly pinkish red, with bring yellow stamens and single petalled. The scent is extremely light. I've planted it out and it seems very happy, but I'd love to know what it is called. Wish it had been Munster W or Darcy B! Still, it came with the house, survived years of total neglect and as such deserves a chance! Also has hips, as i recall when we bought the cottage and it was still in its original spot.
Wonder if @Marlorena can ID it? 😊
it is rather pretty and looks nice against the cotinus, I think.

These are the best photos I am able to take with my phone.
It looks the closest in colour, size and petal habitat to Duchess of Portland, but it is hardly scented at all, and is very thorny (almost like a rugosa) which makes me think that you're probably right Dove and it could well be the Parkdirektor Riggers (what a name) after all. That's a big one! Apparently the Parkdirektor can be trained as a shrub with support...I'm hoping it has a long flowering season, whatever it turns out to be. Time will tell
@Marlorena really knows about roses 🌹
