Plant ID please

My OH got this and was convinced it was a Hawthorn. However it’s never flowered - it is in dry shade. Could it be a field maple?

    Yes I think so. Not a hawthorn.
    Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

    It looks like the native field maple or Acer campestre.
