Suckers on Sambucus Nigra - remove?

My 3 year old sambucus nigra (which I've grown from a cutting), has a straight branch appear from the ground next to the actual plant I planted. I'm assuming this is a sucker? Should I remove it or just leave it? It's been there since last year so grown quite a bit.

    This shrub sends up new growth from the base and is completely normal - much like elders you see in hedgerows
    My sambucus has about 15 such stems now. Each autumn or early spring I cut out about 1/3 of the oldest stems and either prune or leave the others.
    The flowers form on last year's growth
    Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit.
    Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.
