Cotoneaster Cornubia tree

I have a young Cotoneaster tree about 8ft tall and would like to plant around it. Although I think it probably has a main root system it has a carpet of small fibrous roots close to the surface around it. Will I damage the tree if some of the fibrous roots are cut off when I’m planting?

If it’s already 8ft tall, cutting away some roots near the surface will not do your tree any harm.

Thank you thank you very much, that’s reassuring.
