    Top one is Elder. Bottom one is a Phormium.

    Many thanks, any advice on how to look after a Phormium?  a lot of the leaves as you can see are bent over and I was wondering whether these can be removed to leave just the straight ones

    They certainly can ! Just cut as far back as possible ; you'll undoubtedly find a lot more debris in there as well !
    Mine gets a regular haircut following wind damage .
