Help with identifying plant please

polly7872polly7872 Posts: 3

Hi all,
Would anyone have any idea what this plant is please? I have tried to get rid of it from the garden so many times but it just keeps coming back and growing over my flowers.
Thanks :)

Its a Acanthus, hard to get rid of it you don't want it but a nice plant otherwise.

Yup, that's what an acanthus does! It'll regrow from the smallest bit of (deep seated) root. It might be possible to get rid of chemically if you don't mind that, otherwise just keep cutting to keep it in check.

Thank you all so much...is there any way of cutting it specifically in order to keep it in one place?

I can't answer, but your question makes me think it spreads....rhizomes?  We have been nursing one s couple of years on and I think finally this year we are seeing it growing much better.   I wouldn't want it to travel too far though!

Yes, it spreads by underground rhizomes.

I suspect the only way to get rid of it is via chemicals :( Don't try digging it out, you'll just spread root fragments around and they can all turn into a new plant. I guess the way to kill it would be to cut it to the ground, wait for some regrowth and then hit that with Roundup or whatever.
