Is it possible to separate individual dahlia tubers from the bunch and if so should they still be planted horizontally?

    No.
They only grow from "eyes", which are usually found where several individual tubers join together.

However when the get bigger, assuming yours are now 1st season? You may find 2 or 3 stalks on  them you can carefully tease apart and plant each separately.

    Hi Lynn,
I'm nor familiar with how forums work-do I presume your agreeing with punkdoc?-The tubers were lifted last autumn from a bulb i planted earlier the same year-is that what you mean by first season?
    Many thanks,
    Des.

Yes, to agree with Punkdoc,  but, when they get bigger over the years they will separate and each bit will have a stalk. If you gently wiggle them apart you can pot them up separately.   You do need a stalk though, you can’t just pot up one of the fleshy roots.

First season, I would call when you’ve just bought it from the shop. Yours is now in its second season.
