I am getting some good growth on some laurels planted 2 years ago; though tall weeds are suddenly growing beside them. Will this hinder their progress?
Is it best to get rid of weeds and put bark down to prevent appearing again?
Yes ... the weeds will compete for water and nutrition. They’ll also impede air flow at the base of the hedge which will provide good conditions for bacterial infections.
I would weed the hedge, feed with Fish, Blood & Bone or a similar slow release organic fertiliser, give the base of the hedge a really good watering and then mulch with composted bark or similar.
Keeping the base well tended will help keep your hedge growing healthily.
