Horrible Helibore

B3B3 Posts: 24,484
I have a massive helibore which was covered in double+ blooms and still has a lot. Unfortunately, they are a horrible muddy colour. If i were to name it , i would call it Miss Havisham.
I'm assuming that the colour is what it is and theres nothing i can do about it.
But i thought that I'd check before i put her out of my misery.

Put a photo on and see if someone will take it off you. I hate Pattys plum poppy, but others rave about it.  You can't change its colour , it will be fixed. Did you grow it from a seedling or is it a bought plant?   Most of my seedlings are acceptable but they are not usually as good as a selected parent.

I understand that hellebores muddy over time. Mine have. Anna's Red's have become sludge brown.

Its shrub size . Too big to move and i doubt anyone would want it. I'll go and get a picture.

I've just dug out and binned 2 similar ones, B3.  Mine also were infected with honey fungus but they would have come out anyway for the same reasons you mention.  The rootballs were large and tough - ended up just removing a huge lump of root/clay about 18" diameter and leaving it upside-down in one of my 'wildlife' areas to rot down and break-up by itself over the next few months (or years, possibly.)
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Oh i was hoping for shallow roots! I will have to instruct the undergardener to do it while I do some gentle weeding elsewhere. I'm finding forget-me-not removal strangely satisfying.

Do it. You know it's worth it. There'll be plenty next year and next year and next ......

My fingers are itching, but I'll give it another week. They are pretty but get into a hell of a mess.

I like them for about two weeks but once the seeds start appearing, I've had enough. I love the way when you grab the base, the stems come out from all over the place like that creeping grass. That's good too.
