Whats wrong with my grass

I got turf laid about two years ago. It looks half dead and bare and not as green. I am an amateur gardener and understand that grass needs to be looked after.
Things ive noted- ground is quite compact and doesnt seem very deep. Theres mossy stuff in patches and this year lots of weeds such as dandelions, thistles, daisies, buttercup have appeared.
I have a small electric mower which i use on the setting to not cut too short. But i noticed the last year not much growth at all and we get plenty of rain here.
Lawn measures about 12 x 12 feet so not very large but i would like some tips on what to do to maintain it and repair. Ive attached some photos.

Any moss in lawns will indicated either poor drainage or a heavy soil with more shade than sun. Give your lawn a like rake when it's not too wet, but still damp. Spike your lawn at regular intervals and then brush in top-soil sieved. The two jobs should help get your lawn looking better in a couple of months.
  • Thanks, Poor drainage sounds correct as there is an area along the raised bed against the wooden sleeper thats always soggy and bare grass.
Is that to rake loose moss etc?
Also should i put down more lawn seed or give it a chance to 'come back'

Yes, when you rake moss out, there will be exposed soil. Re-seed after you have laid a layer of fine sieved top-soil. Good luck.
  • Yes, grass needs aerating, de-thatching and feeding and watering, and now regular mowing. It takes lots of effort and looking after.
