Please help me identify a plant that I've seen

in Plants
Hello - I've seen these trees/large shrubs a few times while driving to work but not found out for definite what they are.
The flowers look similar to buddleia flowers - except they are maybe a bit shorter and held upright - very vertical (in shades of purple) I thought at first that maybe they were a variety of buddleia but I couldn't find any that looked like them and they have smoother bark.
Tree form - but not standard trees, I've seen them most often with multiple branches coming from quite low down - reaching maybe 2.5 to 3 metres - I've not seen them larger than that.
Theyre in flower at this time of year.
Any ideas?
thank you
