I had one just like that and would give it a brutal hair cut+ pull off the dead leaves and within the same season I would get lots of fresh spears and a much more compact shape
Sandygarden is quite right ; you could reduce it to a football-sized clump providing you have razor-sharp shears . You can't be too brutal with these .
I once reduced one in this manner following the severe winter of 09/10 ; it re-grew and flowered the same year !
I think the worst aspect is getting rid of all the removed foliage .
Agree about needing razor sharp shears - I use a scissors on mine to cut back individual leaves that are tatty. If you lift up sections you can remove all the dead or damaged leaves from the underside.
