Grass type weeds in the lawn

My lawn has several patches of a grass type weed in the lawn.  Not sure if its crabgrass, perennial ryegrass or Yorkshire fog, but I find it annoying especially as it has now spread to several areas.  How can I get rid of it?  Am I best digging up the lawn in these areas and re-seeding?  I guess normal lawn weedkiller won't work as being grass it will shrug it off.  The largest patch is about 18 inches by 12 inches.

    *BUMP*

Here's a picture of the offending grass, if anybody can offer any suggestions.  I did read that if you run a sharp knife thru' it in a criss-cross to cut the roots up that will weaken it, but not sure how effective it is.  Anybody offer any helpful solutions?  Do I just need to dig it out to bare earth and re-seed?

Weed killer will kill the grass. If you don't want it may be easier / faster to dig the offending grass up and re seed , personally I would over sow the whole lawn it can be hard to match grass up.

Just to add ... looks like Couch Grass.

Just counted up to 12 patches of it across the lawn.  Think I might just spray each patch  with glyphosate and then reseed in a few weeks time.  Looks likes you have to ensure to get every bit of root out to be sure of getting it, but I'd probably be digging up the entire lawn if I did that.

It’s amazing how the spray drifts on a lawn 😱. I think you’d be better off using the gel if you’re going to use glyphosate.

Good thinking.  I have some buried at the back of the garage somewhere.  I don't generally like using glyphosate and haven't done so for several years but needs as must.  Thanks for the tip.
