What is wrong with my Escallonia?

I have a Golden Embers Escallonia but it has developed black spots on the leaves (like rose black spot) It is has young new growth so I am guessing that is good. Do you think it might have got damaged during winter? If so, will it bounce back? What should I do ?  T.I.A

It sounds like the common leaf spot that has plagued many Escallonias. You will see new leaf growth that looks fine, but later into the year, they too may develop small spots that get worse into the winter time.

Unfortunately, there is not much you can do apart from promptly removing any dead and diseased leaves lying around the base of your shrub. Try to lay a new thick layer of mulch each year to keep the shrub growing well.
