Buxus balls- what compost?

Dirty HarryDirty Harry Posts: 1,048
Just bought 2 small ones and had it in my head I had John Innes 3 in the shed but it's actually 2.

Is 2 perfectly fine for potting these or should I really go and buy a bag of 3?

To save buying a bag of JI3 just for those, I would just mix some top soil from your garden 50/50 with your J.I 2. and pot them on.  Next year, when they've grown a bit, you could use JI 3 - which is just a bit more gutsy than 2 and has more nutrients.

The difference between No. 2 and No. 3 is the amount of fertiliser, so you could use the No. 2 with some added fertiliser, or just be prepared to start feeding them sooner than you would with No. 3.

My soil is sandy so I'd rather just buy a bag. I'll find a use for the rest sooner or later.
