Unknown Plant in Container?

Hi All, any ideas what this is please. Its popping through in several containers but I'm sure it hasn't been planted.
Thanks.

Not sure it could be Bloodroot (Sanquinaria Canadensis I could be wrong but if it is it will have a white flower.

  • Thanks, it does look very similar doesnt it. Only thing is a youtube video shows it breaking through as a compact purpleish bud, whereas this breaks through with green leaves pretty much the same as the photo.

I wonder if that could be Ivy leaved Toadflax, Cymbalaria Muralis.

You could dig one up but wear gloves as we still don't know for sure what it is. If you dig one up cut the root is if it is red like this, then you will know it's most likely Bloodroot.

Ranunculus of some sort?  They have a tuber looks like a claw.
  • Hi All, many thanks for your comments, I'll try your suggestions. Just a bit more information though, if it helps.

Most of the plants are growing in two containers containing standard Oleander's. One white, one pink. However the pink one didn't flower last year. So I doubt that its seed from them.

One single plant is growing in another container that I think contained Viola's.

I've used the compost (Levington's Multipurpose) in load's of containers so doubt that its contamination from them.

It looks as though somehow some seed has got into the containers but I'm not getting them growing anywhere in the garden which one would expect if that was the case.

I'll dig one up and have a look at the roots.

All the best and thanks again for the suggestions.

  • Here's the root system. Does it help at all?

Are you sure you haven't planted some ranunculus roots?
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

  • Hi Lyn, yunno I had a flash of insight just now. We did buy some last year, had completely forgotten and havent got a clue where we planted them. But think we've just found out!
Thanks for all the input everyone.
