Blackened stem Euphorbia

Ive had a Euphorbia for about a year (watered weekly in the summer, monthly in the winter) and recently the stem has gone black. It started in small patches and then has spread. Its not soft to the touch but I presume it may be rot. Does anyone have any suggestions/ solutions?
