Japanese Wineberry

Last evening a friend brought me round a plant from another friend of our's. I wonder if anyone can tell me anything about this fruit as I've never heard of it and neither has my friend. What soil should it be planted in, it will have to go into a pot as we have smell dark clay here. Thanks for any advice.

Just found some information on Japanese wineberry plants (Rubus phoenicolasius)
apparently they taste a bit like a raspberry but a little more tart and produce lots of fruit.

they're also seriously thorny! i treat mine like an autumn raspberry, they get taken to the ground in March and fruit in August/September

treehugger80 Thanks for the info. I have just found out the are thorny to my cost. I did wonder why the were cut right down but there are three new shoots about 1 inch tall. Can I ask do you like the taste and are the worth room in the garden?

if you have a large garden then they are worth it,
if its a small garden and you have a choice between a wineberry or a raspberry/blackberry then i'd go for the raspberry/blackberry as the wineberry fruits are small and to me have no more flavour than a raspberry/blackberry

Thanks for the treehugger80, I didn't buy this plant is was given to me by a friend. I only have a small garden and all my fruit has to be grown in tub's so I have room for veg.
