Ideas for a pink geranium...

Janie BJanie B Posts: 865
I have a new herbaceous bed, pretty cottagey, which is planted up with pinks, purples and blues. I already have several clumps of geraniums Rozanne and Kashmir White, and would like to include a pink one too, to complement the others. Long flowering, not too thuggish, fully hardy... Any suggestions?

    Soft pink or bright?
I  planted several last year but too soon to comment but I went for tiny monster which is a loud pink and blushing turtle.
I did have a pale pink but can't remember full name except for ' boko' it's foilage was scented but it was pretty invasive and didn't flower all summer.
Cranesbill nursery website is very helpful

And what height and habit do you want?
I like Geranium sanguineum (bright pink)  for a low-grower, (there's a pale pink one as well, Geranium sanguineum "striatum"), Geranium psilostemon for a tall one (magenta pink, dark eye), and Geranium "Ann Folkard" for a sprawler that will windits way through other plants (magenta pink with dark eye, and the young foliage is yellow-ish lime green for added interest, but I guess not to everyone's taste). I also have "Guiseppe" new this year but it hasn't really got going yet so I can't really comment on it)
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained

I bought Mavis Simpson last year, it flowered as long as Rozanne, and is evergreen!

  • My favourite pink hardy geranium of all time, is Dragon's Heart - a deep magenta really, likes dappled shade / sun and will happily grow in and around other stuff. Not thuggish, just very soft, with long sprawling tendrils. Glorious part scrambling down a low wall, pot or raised border. Not evergreen though.

Thanks for all your suggestions, I'm going to have a little look at them all ... am open to whichever, soft or bright, @K67. Probably not too high, @JennyJ. Evergreen is good, but not a deal breaker @Buzzy2 @dappledshade

Quite like the look of Wargrave Pink (and our old fave www secretgardeningclub has it atm at a very reasonable £2.99!)

Geranium 'Anne Thompson' is an excellent one, similar to 'Anne Folkard' but less yellowy foliage and a bit smaller. It winds through surrounding plants in a similar way but to a more modest extent; it is the longest flowering geranium I have, starting a couple of weeks before Rozanne and flowers just as long into Autumn. It responds well to a midseason shearing to refresh the plant.

If you want bright pink I'd recommend Psilostemon, for a very soft pink, Oxonianum Susie White.  Plantsman's Preference have a fantastic selection of hardy Geraniums, good prices and I've always found them very reliable.  Just don't get carried away!

Oooh! I like the sound of Anne Thomson - very similar to my favourite Dragon's Heart, but possibly even longer flowering. Thanks for the tip!
