Being Beastly to Bluebells

B3B3 Posts: 24,435
Over the the years, I have fought a half-hearted battle a against Spanish bluebells. As usual, they are popping through the perennials. This year, I have decided to only pull out the leaves, but leave the flowers so that they can look pretty . Then I will dead-head before they set seed.
It might even weaken the bulb more that removing everything.

Please let us know how you get on.  I'm open to any suggestions for getting rid of the !"£$%^&*(s.

  • I have a batch of them thanks to the neighbours having a whole bank of them next doors...may try this approach and see if it thins out the colony.

Anyone ever tried direct injection with herbicide? Aside from that I've heard trampling is fairly effective over a long period of time but might not be practical in a border..

Has anyone ever, or heard of anyone ever, eliminating them completely?  I suspect  it would take a neutron bomb.

I've accepted that they will never be gone completely, but by June I'll have forgotten about them until next year.

If there are any English bluebells in the neighbourhood it's better to remove the flowers too, so they don't cross with the English ones.

Four days ago WillDB said they should be classed as a notifiable weed !.........couldn't agree more !
Put Muscari into that category too .

I have been digging these pets out of our gardens and took them to the tip. I was speaking to a woman there and she told me to put salt in the middle of the plant. I have never tried this but as we have so many of them anythings worth ago.
