Will a "Honeysuckle Graham Thomas" upset nearby shrubs?

Hi,

I'm planning on planting a Honeysuckle Graham Thomas quite close to an Acer Palmatum and a Magnolia Grandiflora (each about 15 years old).

Will a Honeysuckle Graham Thomas smother or otherwise upset these two shrubs?

I've heard horror stories about Japanese Honeysuckle killing-off nearby plants, so wanted to check first!

Thanks,
Lawrence

I wouldn't recommend either of your trees as a support for a Honeysuckle.

It will spread out and climb up anything it touches. It would be better on a fence or pergola. Magnolia grandiflora has quite brittle branches, and I don't think they would appreciate the weight.  It would detract from the coloured leaves of the acer.
  • If I trained the Honeysuckle against the fence, do you think it would eventually spread across and climb across the nearby Magnolia and Acer too?

It's not the intention to have it climb those, but understand that might actually be what happens

It's up to you not to let it, that's what gardening's about, organising the plants you want to do what you want of them

Would a Star Jasmine have the same problem, or would it be less invasive?

(Point taken on the fate ultimately landing on the gardener, well said  )

I think it would, ours is climbing to approx. 8ft, down the other side (the neighbours) and the wall the other way! Although, it does seem to go behind the ceanthos and not through it.

We have a Lonicera ‘Graham Thomas’ on the fence near our large ash tree.  It’s covering the fence nicely and every summer it sends out long stems aiming for the lower branches of the ash tree ... I cut them back 😊

its a beautiful honeysuckle, gold and cream, with a delicious perfume which fills the garden in a warm event. I think is the best honeysuckle there is ... a really choice plant  😊

Was once recommended on GW as a good plant for an arch. Well the one in our last garden flowered beautifully at the top of a thirty feet tall Hawthorn tree. It does get big if allowed to.
