Brown edges on ficus elastica

hi, 

i have have had this beautiful ficus elastica for about 2 years and for the entire time I have had it the older leaves start to brown around the edges then fall off. It is from Home Depot and was showing these same signs at purchase. I have tried watering with filtered water because I live in NYC and the water is chlorinated. 

It it has been in a 10 inch pot for 2 years as well. 

Local nursuries have said they have encountered similar problems with this plant and have stopped selling them for this reason. Is this true?

    Originating from SE Asia , usually in areas of very high rainfall and humidity , I would guess your plant is too dry ( both at the roots and atmospherically) .

    Thanks! Should I try misting it? Or does it need a humidifier?

    Regular misting with soft-water (ideally rainwater) several times a day would be beneficial ;tropical conditions are difficult to emulate in cooler environments .

    PS Mind the electrical sockets !!! :o
