Tall plants/plants with height for shady border

We have a small garden border which is lacking height and is in a shaded position. As we are in a terraced house we’d like to plant some plants with height to give us a bit more privacy. Preferably ones that would provide this through spring summer whilst we’re enjoying the sunshine :)  Would be very grateful for any advice! Thank you!

Can you tell us a bit more? How big is the bed?  What’s the soil like?
    Perhaps a photo?

I am a great fan of clematis, either on a trellis or on wires. Agree a photo would help.

Also, do you have supports such as a trellis or can you install some?  Tensioned wires between posts are also an option and probably cheaper.

There are several clematis and a few roses that do well in shade.

That fence looks plenty high enough to me but needs some climbers to clothe it.   The border is too narrow for decent sized shrubs so climbers are best unless you're prepared to triple the width.

If you're worried that the garden is overlooked from upstairs next door, just ask yourself what you will be doing that is so private and how much time you think your neighbours will spend peeking out at you.  If necessary, you can then build a pergola in from the fence and let the climbers scramble over the top so you can sit, or whatever, beneath it and unseen.

@Obelixx thank you! It’s more that we have an adjoining path running the back of all the properties so we just don’t want people to look down the garden and straight on to us if that makes sense if we’re sat out having dinner...climbers sound good probably need to think of a good way to structure a trellis around the bottoms of the border :)

Vine eyes (screws with loops instead of heads) and tensioned wires.  Easy and inexpensive and won't rot.

Do many people use the path?  You could try a row of big pots with bamboo your side of the fence - but they will need constant watering. Might be cheaper to put up trellis on top of the path fence, then train a climber along it.

I have verbena bonariensis growing away in the shade under the eaves. It gets tall, flowers away into the autumn but stays thin compared to the ones out in the sun. Would fit into the narrow section of you  bed lovely. Bees and butterflies love it and i've seen wee birds eating the seeds in autumn
