It looks like a chaenomeles to me - a decorative quince. They sucker like crazy. Is there one within about 50ft? Or an old stump that has been cut down?
Helix that looks like a good hit to me. The roots are deep and the original gardener would have likely planted a quince there. My neighbour has one that does well in same aspect so im going to chance it given this bit of knowledge. It's not gone daft since march size wise and other stuff I've tried in that spot have failed as it's dry shade. Thanks folks.
