Flowers / plant ideas for alongside a fence

Hi all newbie to this. 

What flowers/plants would people recommend for alongside a fence acting as a border please? Either individual flowers or ideally a mixture? I'd like something simple to grow and hopefully something long lasting?

Up to now I've only grown in planters such things as geraniums and sweet peas.

Do you know what type of soil you have there and what is the orientation of the border/fence? Also, how wide is your border? It's always best to plan ahead and think about shrubs and trees too. Flowers are usually the last thing on the list of planning a border.
