Hi all,

A couple of purple new incomers to my front and back garden respectively...any suggestions what they are and if they are worth cultivating?

Top one is a violet. I encourage them . some don't. The other one is a dead nettle. Again, keep it if you like it.
    In London. Keen but lazy.

I would keep both they are an important source of nectar for bees at this early time of year.

I envy you with violets I have tried on many occasions to grow them with no success😞

That nettle don't look dead to me. Unless it's not a nettle, of course. aka Lamium purpureum.

The violets are nice, but if they like you they just keep coming. (Sorry Hampshire Hog).
Sometimes a mid pink pops up here,  I have no idea where it came from, I know you can buy them, but I never bought any. It looks exactly like the wild violet you have there, just pink.

I will see how they spread, there’s three or four bunches popped up so far. 👍

Thanks for the real name and by doing so explaining the in joke!

I won’t be killing it off, but purple belongs in the front garden this year, so I might move them - six or seven have appeared in the back corner lawn.
  • Mine violets are white. They seed themselves everywhere but look very pretty.

They are pretty aren't they. I brought some over from my mum's woodland garden but they do like it here a bit too much and have spread rapidly all over. It's a memory of my mum however so I'll be keeping most of them.

I would ditch the violets. I have them in pots of hostas, the only way to get rid of is to wash the roots to remove all traces of violets. They maybe pretty but are a real pest when they take over.
