Dahlia Help Please

Hi everyone

I hope someone can give me some advice please.

About 2 weeks ago, I sowed some Dahlia 'Bishops Children' seeds in a heated propagator. I have only been using the propagator for about 1 week. I had the plants on a windowsill and watered them regularly.

I sowed 6 seeds in module cells, as I am new to growing plants from seed, and I wanted to try it out.

Only 1 of the seeds has germinated and it has 2 leaves at the moment.

Please can someone tell me if I am doing anything wrong?

I kept the module in the propagator and have left it on all the time.

I did take out the module about 2 days ago and put in on my windowsill, because it was sunny and I thought the light might help the seeds germinate.

I have attached a photo and would really appreciate any help.

Thanks

David

It's not unusual for seeds to germinate at different times, particularly if they're a mixture not a single colour/variety. It's all part of the genetic variation.  Wait a bit longer to see if you get any more.

Maybe you have been giving them to much water letterheads being on the dry side.

Yes, l would also wait awhile. I have grown these and they germinated at different times. Give it another week, and if no more appear,  do you have a second lot of dahlia seeds from the packet that you can try ? Don't be disheartened!

I agree with Andy.  I only water seed modules once and let them drain before putting in a propagator.  They won't need watering again until well after germination and are out of the propagater.

  • Was it the free seeds in the magazine? if so here are mine, had them on window sill with cover for about 2 weeks, they are now in greenhouse,
not sure when to pot them up.

I would not pot them up until they have true leaves. At the moment yours just have seed leaves.
How can you lie there and think of England

Sorry Andy, l agree with punkdoc. I wait until the first set of "true" leaves appear. They look nice and healthy,  but those are only the seed leaves. Hold fire is my advice. :)
