It was a process Dutch bulb growers experimented with in the 30s and 40s with bulbs like Dutch iris, hyacinths and some daffs to allow them to export to the southern hemisphere where high summer temperatures could lead to failure in untreated bulbs.

    How old is that book?

I wouldn't trust anything from J Parkers - hopeless record for customer service and often poor quality plants.

If you have ordered and received Dutch iris bulbs from them, just plant them as soon as possible in a hole 3 times their depth so they have twice the depth of soil above them.  They're not fussy about soil other than not liking it wet as that rots the bulbs.

Good luck and enjoy your plants but find a better supplier next time.
