Apple tree cuttings in water method

Anyone managed to get apple tree cuttings to root by putting them in water?

Currently mine are at the green shoot/small leaf stage.

anything's worth a try but it will need to produce roots before it exhausts itself making leaves

Might be worth an experiment, but I think this method only works for soft cuttings, better to put them in gritty compost in a tench outside.
    AB Still learning

  • 2nd attempt with photo. 1st one ended up in  new thread-how bizarre  :o

Have got quite a lot going outdoors too-bet & braces. Hope they hold up. 😎

Also, March is the ideal month for grafting.  Apparently!

    I think I'll have a go, Phaidra!
  • It would be interesting to know what period of time to expect to see roots developing.
  • UPDATE:April 2019

As the leaves gradually died off on each plant, I started to put them in to large pots of 50/50 soil & grit sand outdoors as a sort of 2nd chance. There were no roots at this time. One or two seem like they are still alive, but it is too early to say for sure what is happening. Will update in due course.

Cuttings straight from tree to pots outdoors
Around  mid Feb 2019) I also took some cuttings from the same tree to place directly in to soil from day one. Certainly some of these seem to be doing something now and look quite healthy. See photos just taken today, so about nearly 2 months since planting.

It is tempting to have a look for roots, but I am going to wait until  about November. I will then put any successful ones-with roots in to individual pots at that time. Will update on these nearer the time with more  photos if good results.

  • Just curious. Did some of these apple cuttings take?
