Gladiolus bulbs

I have some large hydrangea shrubs in my garden tubs.
I'm thinking of planting a number of gladiolus bulbs in the pots
Any thoughts please on whether it would work or will the hydrangea plants be too big and prevent them from growing

I wouldn't. They have different requirements, and they would be inhibited too, as you say.
If you want to have them inproximity, it would be better to plant the gladioli en masse in tubs, and then you can position them appropriately
