The lower leaves of my large, pot-grown, melianthus are all dead. Will leaves re-sprout from the bare stem, or must I cut it back? Thanks for any advice.

They don't seem to re-sprout not on mine anyway, if they get really scrawny I cut them back and they come again. (Melianthus Major)
