Saskatoon Shrubs

.
Has or does anyone grow Saskatoon shrubs, if so how easy are they to get to fruit and how tall do they grow?

Also do they need netting like cherries which attract every blackbird, thrush and starling from miles around before they are ripe!

 Cheers,look forward to any answers!

It's an amelanchier.   Most people in the UK grow these as ornamentals and for their long season of interest from flowers and foliage, not for their fruit.

    Hi @Braidman

I grow Amelanchier lamarckii and A. canadensis, mainly as ornamentals, but I do eat the fruit from them too, when the blackbirds don't get to them first anyway!
They are very easy to grow and to be honest, I do absolutely nothing with them, I just leave them to get on with things themselves.

I think the plant that they call Saskatoon is technically only Amelanchier alnifolia, of which I have no experience of growing.

    Hi Both!

Thanks for your answers, my wife had been to a WI do and got a pie made with what she was told were Saskatoon berries and was impressed!

Now all I have to do is provide the berries and she will provide the pies!

Ps, The birds are a real problem on our allotments, especially cherries and strawberries!

    Cheers for now!
