Sycamore seeds

How do all you gardeners cope with sycamore seeds.?   With trees shedding them all over my garden each year I have them growing everywhere as it is impossible to gather them all up.     Do squirrels or birds eat them?   I have fed them into compost bins along with their leaves but am not sure that this is the thing to do.

Same as we do with the Ash seedlings. Pull them up when they are small and dig them up when we miss them.

I wouldn't put them into compost bins, unless you want a forest next year.

And go over them with the lawnmower if they're in the grass.
    In London. Keen but lazy.
  • Thank you for your replies - but do squirrels and/or birds eat them?

I used to just mow them.
I don't think they get eaten, Virginia, but I could be wrong.
They're not really like acorns or other 'nuts' and the little wings might make it tricky unless they have knives and forks  :D

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

  • Encouraging to hear that at least field mice find them tasty.    I was rather hoping squirrels might too as I have seen squirrels run along the top of the fence into my neighbour's apple tree and eat the tiny green apples.    Plenty of squirrels about here.!

Plenty of squirrels in my part of Devon too, Virginia,   They scoff the bird food, don’t think they eat the tree seeds.

  • I would have loved some of those seedlings. Love trees in pots!
