Leaf Collecting

As far as I can see my lawn mower is the same one as Monty Don uses, so how come he can use his to pick up leaves from the lawn and mine just shreds them and does not pick up the shreddings? What setting is used to force the machine to pick up?  Oddest thing of all is that if I pull the machine backwards it does pick up the leaves, but that is not the safest way to use a mower.

  • We have an attachment/bag to fit on the mower for picking up grass cuttings or leaves. The mower shreds/cuts the leaves as it mows - sorry I can't be more helpful as I can't understand how your mower does not pick up the leaves assuming it picks up the grass cuttings for you.

It does not always pick up the grass either. Certainly have to go over one of the grassed areas twice to get the cuttings off.
In theory the mower blows the leaves into the bag on the back, but it just seems to shred them and leave the tiny bits on the grass/moss. Dry leaves as well, before anyone asks.
  • Clean the deck, clean the bag, increase engine revs and buy an aftermarket high lift blade... is it a Honda? Which model?

Cheap bosch electric mower, collects and shreds the leaves no problem.

If it's not picking anything up it sounds like it needs a clean inside. also the bag, if air cannot get out of it anymore it's not going to pick anything up. If it is all clean then a service might be in order.

    What kind of mower?
Sure you would not be daft as me to have sharpened then fitted the rotary mower blade the wrong way around.  Took me a good few  minutes to realize what I had done.
    We all have our moments.

I found our old rotary Mountfield picked up well whatever the height of cut.
Now have a new Hayter, it is pants unless you have it on the shortest/lowest setting.
Which is not what one wants this time of year on a lawn.

It is a Honda. Not sure what model.Everything is clean (do it every time I have used it). The bag inflates as it is supposed to do.  It is only one particular area of grass that it does not collect the grass from and none of the three different makes of mower we have had pick it up on there either. The  Bosch electric one does, but not easy to get on to the distant lawns. Not intending having any grass at all if we ever manage to sell this place and move, so not really going to go to the trouble of buying new bits for this one.
Just wondered if I had it on the wrong cut height. Tried it on 1 through 7 and it still leaves the shredded leaves behind on all of them. Eventually picked them up with the Scarifier on the highest setting.

@Berghill. Have you checked to see if you have a mulching attachment on your cutter deck which chops the leaves and leaves them on the ground to feed the lawn.

We have a G Tech does a great job of picking up the leaves nicely shredded, to be placed on the compost heap.

The mulching attachment is in the shed where it has been since we bought the mower.
And another thing, I watched someone on the T.V. run their mower over some stems which they had cut down, it chopped them up nicely. Ours just runs over the top of them!
