@cornishpixi , I have one of the cultivars mentioned in the GI article, Malus 'Evereste'. Planted 4 years ago, has grown very nicely. I can recommend it, as it's an almost all year round sight. See http://www.rezeau.org/wp-garden/fr/malus-perpetu-evereste/

You could narrow down your choice. Would you like green or dark red leaves; white, pink or red flowers; red, yellow or orange fruit; a weeping or upright habit? I like the yellow fruits of Golden Hornet. I have a dark red flowered one with reddish leaves and dark red fruit but I have forgotten it's name.
