I have this it also come's in white. Dug some of mine up the other week only to find it come up again. The common name is Bears Britches and the spikes are really spiteful like a bear claw. See my Avatar having said the above they a beautiful.
A. mollis doesn't have spikes, that's A. spinosus.
It is as diana1 said a beautiful flower. They can and do sprout from every piece of root if you dig up or disturb them. They have fat white roots which can snap. Each piece will happily carry on regardless. But leave it alone if you have room. I really liked ours but it was too big for a too small spot so eventually had to go. It is still making its presence felt.
